How Did Funk Cancer Come About?
We owe it all to our Founder - Steve Coffaro
Steve, a professional bass player for more than 30 years, began this journey with a prostate cancer diagnosis in February 2021. His was caught early and responded well to radiation treatment, but as he shared his story with friends in the music industry, he was shocked at how few were knowledgeable about screening for prostate cancer. He wanted to spread the word about early detection and from this desire Funk Cancer was born. Steve filed the certificate of formation on May 28, 2021 and earned his certification in Nonprofit Management from Collin College in August 2021.
Treasurer and Grant Writer - Angela Coffaro
Angela had already been an operating room nurse for more than 15 years when she married Steve in 2017. Because raising two teens, attending her husband’s gigs, and working full-time didn’t keep her busy enough, in 2019 she enrolled to earn her Master’s degree in Nursing Education. She received that from Western Governors University in August 2021. Supporting Steve through his diagnosis and treatment with her medical knowledge and compassion, she was delighted to find that her degree prepared her well for her role as Funk Cancer’s medical terminology interpreter, treasurer, and grant writer.
